I think people are involved in music for all sorts of reasons. Although dreams of big bling & mating privileges top a few lists, I'd like to pipe up about some of the "pay backs" that are near and dear to me.

On one level, music is just beating on a log with some special yelling. Or, it's a fashion item people use to help define their identity.

On another level, there's something that makes you play a CD over and over. Something that just gets you. Like, when the drummer and bass player find the pocket, the singer drops into the zone or the lead player stops playing pentatonic variations and makes that thing talk.

Bam! There's the paycheck. You know what I'm talking about. That's why I do this. I'll bet that's one of the reasons you do this too.

I performed as a singer/songwriter in the late sixties, was hired as a full-time engineer in the mid-seventies and by the mid-nineties, I had recorded & mixed a number of albums, EP's and demos.

Back in the day, it was a big job to pull the music out of the analog mud and we were always running out of tracks. Now, there's no mud and we have unlimited tracks.

Our big challenge today is to not kill the music with our great, new tools.
